Mountain Ave Mile:  Run in Memory of Jane Welzel

Jane Welzel, founder and race director of the Mountain Avenue Mile, was a local Fort Collins running icon, hero, and inspiration. Jane started the Mountain Avenue Mile in 1998. We are honored to carry on her running legacy and iconic event.

Her running accomplishments include:

    • five-time Olympic Trials Marathon participant (1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000)
    • 1979 Nittany Valley Marathon winner (2:48:47)
    • 1983 Philadelphia Marathon winner (2:36:18)
    • 1988 Hokkaido Marathon winner (2:40:53)
    • 1988 Runners World Comeback runner of the year (after a 1984 car accident that broke her neck and left her in a body cast for three months)
    • 1990 National Marathon Champion (2:33:24)
    • 1992 Grandma’s Marathon winner (2:33:01, PR)
    • 1996 USATF National 25k Champion (open & master)
    • 1996 USATF Master Runner of the Year
    • 1997 USATF Master Runner of the Year
    • 1997 Runners World Master Runner of the Year
    • 2013 Inducted into the Colorado Running Hall of Fame
Dave McGillivray, race director of the Boston Marathon, noted that Jane was a role model for many female runners and helped spark the early movement of women’s running, saying “Jane helped crumble the walls of intimidation for thousands of women to not only run but to participate in races.” Sadly, Jane passed away in September 2014, at age 59.
